Southron-ness
Via Abiola Lapite I found this quiz, which asks "Are You A Yankee Or A Rebel?"
What is amusing is that Abiola, a guy from a Nigerian background who lives in London and studied at the decidedly Yankee Dartmouth College and has never been south of the Mason-Dixon line, scored 62% while I, with a genuine Southern Belle for a mother and many trips to the South under my belt, only got 45%. Perhaps this shows the greater continuity between English as spoken in the South and in England than between the mother country and the Northeastern US?
